Lumineers in Wauwatosa

What Are Lumineers?

Lumineers are ultra-thin porcelain veneers used to cover up dental imperfections. Because Lumineers are thinner than traditional veneers, we’re able to bond them to your teeth without removing any enamel, which makes them reversible. They are also much more cost-effective and require fewer appointments. Common cosmetic issues that can be covered with porcelain shells include:

  • Stains or discoloration
  • Chips & cracks
  • Gaps
  • Crooked teeth
  • Unevenly shaped or sized teeth

What is the Lumineers Placement Process?

You’ll come in for a consultation with Dr. Shaun McCue to determine if you’re a good candidate for Lumineers. You should be in good oral health and not have any severe discoloration or damaged teeth that cannot be adequately covered with Lumineers, which due to their thinness, are more transparent than traditional veneers.

Dr. McCue will then take impressions of your teeth and send them to the dental lab that will create your Lumineers. A shade guide will be used to match your tooth color to the Lumineers. They use your teeth impressions as a guide to match the shape, size of your teeth.

Lumineers are .3 mm thick which is much thinner than traditional veneers. Because they’re ultra-thin, we won’t need to prepare your teeth by shaving down your enamel. Within a few weeks, we’ll receive your custom set and you’ll return for a separate appointment to have them bonded to your teeth.

How Long Do Lumineers Last?

Lumineers can last between 10-20 years with proper care, similar to traditional veneers. Best of all, Lumineers aren’t permanent so they can be removed without any damage to your natural teeth. Traditional veneers require shaving down your natural enamel which is an irreversible procedure.

This means that if you choose to get veneers, you’ll need to keep your teeth covered for the rest of your life. With Lumineers, however, if you someday decide you no longer want them, we can simply remove them and your natural teeth will be unaltered.

How Do I Care For My Lumineers?

Lumineer care is all about maintaining good oral hygiene, reducing wear and tear, and limiting your exposure to surface stains. Good oral hygiene consists of regular brushing and flossing. You should use a soft-bristle toothbrush and brush gently with fluoride toothpaste. Brush twice and floss once per day.

Porcelain is prone to chipping and cracking just as your natural teeth are, so you’ll need to reduce your risk of damage by avoiding hard and sticky foods. You should never use your teeth as tools or chew on ice or your fingernails.

If you grind your teeth, you’re likely not a great candidate for Lumineers unless you’re persistent about wearing a mouthguard while you sleep. Reduce your consumption of coffee, tea, and wine which can cause your Lumineers to stain over time. Remove surface stains and keep your teeth healthy with regular visits to the dentist every 6 months.
