Kick butt tips, tricks and tutorials.

If you want to make the most of your dental plan in Wauwatosa, McCue Dental Health is here to help. In this blog, we’ll go over a few steps you should take to make sure you understand your policy, what’s covered, and how to make the most of your dental insurance coverage.

  1. Get Preventive Care Twice Per Year

Almost every dental plan will cover two cleanings and oral exams each year for adults, as well as annual x-rays for no out-of-pocket cost. Kids under 18 can usually qualify for additional benefits like fluoride treatments and dental sealants. Make sure you take advantage of this by seeing Dr. McCue twice each year.

  1. Know The 100-80-50 Coverage Structure

Preventive care has no out of pocket cost because of the common 100-80-50 coverage structure offered by dental insurers. In this structure:

  • 100% of the cost of preventive care is covered
  • 80% of the cost of “basic” care like fillings is covered
  • 50% of the cost of  “advanced” care like crowns or dental bridges is covered

What this means is that the more severe your oral health issues are, the more you’ll pay out-of-pocket. That’s just another reason to keep your mouth healthy!

  1. Understand Your Deductible & Annual Maximum

Most dental plans have a deductible of between $25 and $250. You must meet this threshold with out-of-pocket spending before your plan begins to cover your dental care. Then, your plan will pay for treatment until you reach your annual maximum.

As you may have already guessed, the annual maximum is the total your plan will pay toward your care each calendar year. This is usually set between $1,000 and $2,000, though there are some plans that don’t have an annual maximum.

  1. See An In-Network Dentist When Possible

At McCue Dental Health, we work with many insurers in the Wauwatosa area, and can help you get the coverage and care you need. Call (414) 456-1091 for more information and to get started.

  1. Consult Directly With Your Insurer And Coverage Documents

All of the above advice is helpful in general, but if you are not sure what kind of coverage you’re entitled to, we highly recommend contacting your insurer directly with any questions you have, and/or consulting with your insurance coverage documents.

By doing this, you can make sure you know your coverage rights and can maximize your payouts based on your specific insurance plan.
